Chapter 11

Baz and I walked into what I was pretty sure was the biggest and grandest office I had ever seen in my life. I couldn’t control the expression on my face at all as I walked inside, it was so outlandish. I was pretty sure that Ranger Selltz’s office was bigger than my entire ship, and why anyone would need so much space all to themselves baffled me.

The room itself had a white-tiled floor with a luxuriously fluffy rug in the center of the room, although I was suspicious that it might have been a creature before it was a floor dressing, if the paws at the corners were real. There was a closed door on one side of the room, and I assumed that probably led to a bathroom of some kind, because why would someone with such a large office want to share a toilet with the staff?

There were also golden shelves all around the edge of the room which had been adorned with a number of different objects, a few of which I recognized, but most of them I could only imagine where Selltz had picked them up. Of course, there were a few files and pieces of technology squeezed among the bric-a-brac, but most of the objects were the stuff of dreams and nightmares.

One shelf had a row of different preserved skulls on it. One skull had three eye sockets, while another had a huge jaw with tusks protruding up over most of the face. I could only imagine that these had been some of the criminals that Selltz had chased down, and while I was all for being proud of one’s achievements, displaying their heads like trophies seemed kind of barbaric and a little insensitive.

There were also weapons on display that were much more interesting, and less disturbing, to me. Some of them resembled ancient swords or guns, while others were much more intricate and like nothing I’d seen before. There was a staff on one of the top shelves that particularly caught my eye. It was dark purple and about six feet in length. There was a curved, white end to it that looked like it had been carved from a large bone, and the tip of it looked razor-sharp. It was embellished with gold detailing, which fit with the running theme of Selltz’s quarters, and it looked like something that might have belonged to some great king back in the day.

In fact, all of the items in the room were incredible. It was like I had walked into a museum of the galaxy, and I wondered if I would ever get the opportunity to learn more about where these had come from and who had owned them before my fellow Space Ranger had.

And with that, I turned to find the person I’d hoped to meet. My eyes were drawn to an enormous desk in the center of the room that dominated the space. It was brown with flecks of gold set into it, and behind it was a huge chair that looked incredibly comfortable.
